Building Your AI Writing Workflow
A practical guide to integrating AI writing tools into your creative process without losing your authentic voice.
AI writing tools are everywhere. But using them well is not obvious.
The Problem with Default AI Use
Most people use AI tools wrong. They paste a topic, get output, and publish. The result sounds like everyone else.
Your voice disappears.
A Better Approach
I have been developing a workflow that keeps AI as a support system, not a ghostwriter. Here is what works:
1. Start with Your Own Ideas
Never begin with AI. Start with your own thoughts, even if they are messy. Write bullet points. Record voice memos. Get your raw thinking down first.
AI should refine your ideas, not generate them.
2. Use AI for Structure, Not Substance
Once you have your ideas, use AI to help organize them. Ask it to suggest an outline. Have it identify gaps in your argument. Let it recommend transitions.
The substance stays yours. The structure gets support.
3. Edit Ruthlessly
Every AI output needs editing. Look for:
If it does not sound like you, change it.
4. Add Your Specific Details
AI cannot know your specific experiences. After every AI-assisted section, ask yourself: What specific example from my life would make this real?
Add those details. They are what make your content yours.
My Actual Process
Here is what a typical writing session looks like for me:
1. **10 minutes**: Free write my thoughts on the topic
2. **5 minutes**: Ask AI to suggest an outline based on my notes
3. **20 minutes**: Write the first draft myself, using the outline
4. **10 minutes**: Ask AI to identify unclear sections
5. **15 minutes**: Revise and add specific examples
6. **5 minutes**: Final read-through for voice consistency
Total: About an hour for a substantial piece.
What I Have Learned
AI works best as a thinking partner, not a writing replacement. The best content still comes from human experience, opinion, and perspective.
Use AI to think more clearly. Write the actual words yourself.
Try This Week
Pick one piece of content you need to create. Use this workflow:
1. Write your ideas first
2. Use AI only for structure suggestions
3. Write the draft yourself
4. Edit for your voice
Notice the difference in how it feels to create and how the final piece sounds.
Your voice matters. AI should amplify it, not replace it.

AI tools can help you write more. But they should not replace your voice. Here is how I built a workflow that uses AI as a support system, not a replacement.
